Chinese Mantis

I was watching the dogs play from my kitchen window when I saw our foster pup Buster playing with something. He would pounce, jump back, and then look up at me as if to say, "Look what I found!" My curiosity peaked, I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

Today I was able to capture a shot of one of the largest bugs I've seen in quite awhile. Known as the Chinese Mantis or Tenodera aridifolia sinensi, they are now common from NY to GA and are the largest of the mantis family. This specimen was approximately 6- 7 inches long, however according the world of Wiki, they generally only grown to 4 inches. The mantis thankful that I arrived when I did. I placed my new friend on the other side of the fence, safe from the dogs. I think he was quite pleased with my choice of relocation on our cherry peppers.
